The Death of Football

February 7, 2008 in Football | Tags: abroad, Football, premiership, tv

First they took out the stands
and I did not speak out
because I was sitting.
Then they priced out the kids
and I did not speak out
because I was an adult.
Then they took matches off TV
and I did not speak out
because I had Sky.
Then they played abroad
And there were no games left
to see.

Mosh

I can’t be bothered re-typing everything I’ve put on my blog, so if it’s OK, I’ll just link it. Suffice to say I think it’s a bloody awful idea, but at least I’ve explained why, between all the swear words.

Diehard Geordie

Whilst agreeing with every word about the ‘fall’ of football I just did not expect to see a ‘bastardisation of Martins Niemollors poem on your site.

I am so disappointed in you its not clever, just sad.

When the Nazis came for the communists,
I remained silent;
I was not a communist.

When they locked up the social democrats,
I remained silent;
I was not a social democrat.

When they came for the trade unionists,
I did not speak out;
I was not a trade unionist.

When they came for the Jews,
I remained silent;
I wasn’t a Jew.

When they came for me,
there was no one left to speak out.

Mosh, Schinders - its an incredible decision and demonstrates that only money rules in the end. Our loyalty is only of value until other fans come along who are willing to pay more.

Diehard, sorry that you feel offended by it. I wrote another post that basically came out in a way that reminded me of the poem. That’s why I resorted to that version.

I don’t think there’s anything to be offended by Diehard - Steve is sensitive to that poem, trust me. I think the poem applies to speaking out about ANYTHING - OK so football is much less important than its original subject, but still it works. And if it reminds someone of the sentiment of that powerful poem, that’s a good thing. Anyway, I appreciate the point.

Money is taking over an age-old working class game and it’s a crying shame for those who enjoy it. The select few can afford to travel to these games - what about the dads who just want to take their kids to a game at the weekend? What about ‘family entertainment’? It’s just money, and it’s such a shame.

Does not mean I don’t like your blog - I do, that’s why I keep on coming back. I like to know how the young ones think and re-act.

Nice apology accepted with grace. (And I have been guilty of same in past).

Young ones? I’m 36.

Diehard - there’s just something about being back in the UK - I spend half my time angry. I’m a different person overseas - not sure whether its because for language reasons everything bypasses me, or if its because I don’t feel responsible because it’s not MY country.

But it’s been a while since I read about anything as obviously greed-driven as the football thing. I feel like a sucker to be honest - like my loyalty has been used. They deserve nothing but empty stadiums.
